Top 5 Things to Do Texas-OU Weekend

Time is flying by and it is already the first Friday of the month. Which means, the fabulous Tori Klem is guest blogging! Read her top 5 tips for TX vs OU weekend below!

First, we’re undefeated in the Big 12 (gotta believe in the little things)!

Second, next weekend is Texas-OU (and/or ACL round #2).  The Longhorn vs. Sooner matchup is one of every Longhorn’s favorite games of the season.  It combines excellent fried food, fun fair games and football all in one weekend.  Plus, win or lose, we all get to drive back from the Red River Rivalry gloating in the fact that we live in Austin, Texas… not Norman, Oklahoma.

While this list isn’t comprehensive, I wanted to include some of my five favorite things to do during the Red River Rivalry weekend – whether you’re a collegiate living the dream or alum trying to relive the dream, hope you get to enjoy or have enjoyed all five:

5. Stop for a kolache at Little Czech Stop in West.  Stop for a fruit-cream cheese kolache concoction.  Yes, it’s worth the wait.   You have to love this little Czech Stop; they supplied kolaches and food to the first responders and volunteers helping out West residents after the fertilizer plant explosion in April.

4. Pre-game with fellow Longhorns at the Red River Party or the Burnt Orange Bash.  I haven’t been to the Burnt Orange Bash personally but it looks like a great time for Texas Exes.  On the other hand, the Red River Party is like a beautiful undergrad Thursday night when all of your friends ended up arriving at Maggie Maes at the same time.

3. Make time for the Texas State Fair.  Tessie wrote a comprehensive post for tips on how to make the best of your time at the fair, so check that out and DEFINITELY get your tickets beforehand if you can!  Some people naysay the idea of hitting up the fair when it’s going to be an already  long day, but do not listen! The fair is so Texan and so unique.  It’s just a few weekends every year and is the ultimate pre-party for a Longhorn game.

2. Bring a painted cooler (full of goodies!).  If you’re staying at a hotel, make sure to BYOB in a festively painted cooler.  When you’ve braved the 18 hours of traffic to get to Dallas from Austin this weekend, the last thing you want to do is hit up a gas station for ice and beverages.  Bring your own, full of festive drinks and Gatorades/waters and you won’t waste any time once you’re in Dallas.

1. Dine at Dick’s Last Resort.  This is totally touristy and really cliché, but Dick’s is one of those hilariously embarrassing restaurants that you need to try just once.  The waiters write offensive, dirty, rude and/or demeaning phrases on a hat that you then wear throughout dinner; phrases that haunt you for years, making you question yourself.

Whatever you do, make sure you’re wearing stylish Longhorn Fashions throughout the whole weekend! (Currently drooling over the white mini studded skirt).

What else is a must-do for Texas-OU?

Hook ‘em!
